My name is Tiantian Wang. My wife Yaqin is my college classmate. We live in a regular apartment in Hangzhou.Hangzhou “Exquisite Jade” home。
我叫王田田，我和我的妻子雅琴是大学同学，我们家在杭州，是在一个普通的住宅楼里。杭州“翠玲珑”之家。
Yaqin and I both like a house called“Exquisite Jade” a lot. (Tiantian Wang, Architect) It is located at Canglang Pavilion in Suzhou, which was built in Song Dynasty. Teacher Shu Wang gave us the first architecture lesson in the sophomore year of college at the Canglang Pavilion.“Exquisite Jade” is located inside bamboo woods, which is composed of three houses connected by across corners. Each room is very upright and foursquare. But when you get inside, you feel very tortuous. After that class, we started dating. Sometimes when we do design, we think of this prototype. Even when we were designing our own home, we thought of it.
我跟雅琴都有一个情结（王田田，建筑师）我们很喜欢一个房子，叫“翠玲珑”。它在苏州沧浪亭，建于宋代，本科二年级的时候，王澍老师为我们上了第一堂课建筑课，就是在苏州的沧浪亭，“翠玲珑”藏在一片竹林里面，它是由三个房子在角部连接而成，然后每个房子都很正，但是进去之后你会有曲折的体验。那次园林课之后，我们就成了男女朋友，我们有时候做设计的时候经常会想到这个原形，到（设计）自己家的时候也会自然会想到它。
When Yaqin and I went to check out the semi-finished bare apartment, we tried to put “Exquisite Jade” structure into a 80 square-meter apartment, thinking how it would look like.We combined the Exquisite Jade structure with the diagonal structure of the apartment. When you firstly come in, you might feel a little narrow and even dark. But after a turning point, it will become bright, all of sudden, then you can slowly see the whole residential scene. Restaurant, living room, and workplace are all included in this area. I can see it as three rooms or a big room.In such a space, you can always feel the existence of each other, and at the same time, you can find a corner where you can be alone. It is also a way to make the space looks bigger.
当我和雅琴一起来到毛坯房的现场的时候，我们就是想把“翠玲珑”的结构放到一个80平米的户型里面，看看它会变成什么，我们把“翠玲珑”的空间结构连接了这个户型的对角线，进来的时候，你会觉得有些狭小甚至有些幽暗，但是一个转折，光线就会由暗变明，然后整个住宅的场景会慢慢展开。餐厅、客厅、工作间、都在这个区域里面，我既然可以把它看作三个小房间，也可以把它看作一个通透的大房间，在这样的空间里面，你可以随时感受到对方的存在，同时也可以找到各自独处的角落，我觉得这也是一种，把一个空间做得显得大的方法。
We designed a series of wooden structures, and its plasticity is very high. It can be suspended ceiling on the top; It can be used as book shelves, or cabinets on the wall. It can also turn into furniture in space.The ceiling part can be opened, and certain parts are the outlets for air conditioning. Some places can be opened from both sides, used as storage. We also use the ceiling on the top as a lighting lantern. We designed three types of lighting. One is completely revealing outside, which is the brightest. One is through the white acrylic, which is the second brightest. There is another one through the round hole on the ceiling. We can turn it on, when we watch movies.
我们设计了一系列的木构，它的可塑性很强，在顶部他就是吊顶，在墙面它会变成书架，变成柜子，在空间中就变成了家具，吊顶的部分它是可以打开的，有些地方就是空调的回风口和出风口，那有些地方打开以后两侧可以作为储藏的功能。我们直接把吊顶当成一个照明的大灯笼。我们为它设计了三种照明，一种就是完全露明的，亮度最亮，一种是透过白色亚克力，照明的亮度其次，还有一种是透过吊顶上的圆洞，可以在看电影的时候开。
During the construction for our home, we also built space equipment of a similar structure, called cloud ladder, for an art exhibition. Then we recycled the materials from that equipment and used them at home. Sometimes, when friends come over, they can still see the words cloud ladder on the wood, somewhere.
我们在这个家的施工过程中，同时为了一个艺术展做了一个叫《云梯》的空间装置，用的是一个类似的构造。家里面后来用的木料大部分都回收自那个装置，然后朋友过来的时候其实还可以看到，那个《云梯》的字样出现在局部的木头上。
Besides “Exquisite Jade”, we arranged other private space between these two areas. We also designed different interfaces of various transparent interfaces. For example, the kitchen delivery window is half niche, half hole.For example, the south interface of the bathroom. When you wash your hands, you can see far-away mountains through the grids. In addition, we also built an interface made of special frosted glass. It looks like green jelly, from the side. You can see the light, but can’t see through. It is also a reflection of “jade” from “Exquisite Jade”.
“翠玲珑”之外我们安排了其他的私密空间，在这两个区域之间，我们设计了不同通透程度的界面，比如说厨房的送餐口，它一半是壁龛，一半是窗洞，比如说洗手间的南界面，洗手的时候就可以透过木格来看到远山，另外我们还特别做了一个由磨砂玻璃条拼成的界面，从侧面看它就像一个翠绿的果冻，只透光不透影，可以说这也是对“翠玲珑”的“翠”字的一个回应。
The master bedroom also maintains a normal bedroom’s function and size. Parents can come and visit sometimes. Because of the space limitation, we have compressed one of the bedrooms into a size of a bed. The door looks like a door for a cabinet, so it looks like a chamber in the garden.This apartment has a special characteristic. It has a 5,6 square meters of the place with very high ceiling, like 3.7 meter. We divided into two floors, the first floor is for dressing room, and the second floor can be used to meditate, sleep or for storage.
主卧还保持了一个正常卧室的功能和大小，父母来的时候可以住，因为面积的限制，我们压缩了其中一个卧室。压缩成了一个床的大小，它的入口就像一个柜子的柜门，所以很像一个园林中的密室。这个户型有一个特殊的地方，就是它有一块5、6平米的地方是特别高的，大概有3米7的样子，所以我们在这里做了一处二层小楼，一楼是用作更衣室，二楼可以用来冥想、睡觉或者是储藏。
The construction took us a very long time, around 1 year. At first, we saw this as an experiment. It is still unfinished, and it may look different in a while.
我们施工的时候拉得很长，大概花了一年时间，我们做这个房子的初衷就是要做一场生活的实验，它是未完成的，可能过段时间它会又会变成另外的样子。
